Collage

I chose to do the picture as a collage so I could make some elements bigger, thus showing their importance. I also think this format shows how Salinger lets us see into Zooey and Franny's world in little snapshots. Salinger's description of objects enlightens us to the family past, as well as characterization of the Glass family. Many things stood out to me reading the last section. The large red couch, the cigarettes and cigars, the dog outside the window, and the scrap book on the wall. By using the collage format i could bring these things to the front in my artwork. Salinger's writing style shows the reader instead of merely telling them, through this format I believe I accomplished the same thing, while also highlighting and distinguishing the important vs the mere elemental.

Identifying Important Objects- Maura #1

Frog Legs and Escargot-
Lane eats these two meals, which are very lavish. It seems as though he is not eating them for sustenance, but for the message they send.

This is the book that Franny has decided to start following. It is a fanatical piece of literature that states if one prays continually they will see god.

Although Franny is praying constantly, and not eating, it is easy for her to smoke multiple cigarettes. Smoking in the play is a constant and lavish activity that Salinger uses to express character actions.

Franny's beaver coat is used to show the shift in her relationship with Lane. At first it is a symbol of recognition, it is the first thing he notices about her. He then remembers how much she loves the coat, and how it is "an extension of her body." Later Lane looks at the coat with disgust after Franny slams everything he says. Later the coat is left behind as Franny goes to the bathroom, symbolizing how Franny has left behind her old self.
